August 2009 - China and its Development Programme for Renewable Energy

“China is preparing its Development Programme for Renewable Energy and Newly Developed Energy, which it is expected to be finished by the end of 2009,” said Qing SUN, deputy-director of the National Energy Administration (NEA).

The Chinese government is focusing on the development of renewable energy, such as wind, solar, biomass etc.  and also looks at improving the efficiency of traditional energy's usage. (building smart grids for example)

It is expected that the targets for 2020 of energy production in the country, for wind and solar energy will reach 150,000,000 kw and 10,000,000-20,000,000 kw respectively. The previous Plan for Renewable Energy (2007), had much less ambitious targets.

Zhipeng LIANG, department chief of Renewable Energy of National Energy Administration estimated that, within the next decade, the Chinese government will invest more than the equivalent of 310 billion EURO in the development of renewable energy.

Note : Mr SUN Qing will be transferred to the China Nuclear Power Group
